Cllr Phyllis Ballam was elected Mayor for the new Civic Year at a ceremony at the Ware Priory on 19th May.
She was born on in Hertford and educated at St. Josephs Convent. Phyllis has lived in Ware for the past 35 years and is married to John. They have one daughter, four sons and twelve grandchildren.
Prior to retirement Phyllis was a senior clerical officer with the Valuation Tribunal. She has been very active in many local community groups including Town Twinning and St. Mary’s Parish Church and is also a District Councillor.
Cllr Ballam represents Chadwell Ward and her chosen charities for her year are the Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice and Ware St. John’s Ambulance Brigade.
Cllr Katy Little was elected Deputy Mayor.
The role of Mayor is principally a symbolic one, with the post being held for 12 months, and elected by the full town council. Past mayors include George Powell (2007-2008), Terrence Milner (2006-2007). Malcolm Alexander (2005-2006), Phyllis Ballam (2004-2005), Jeanette Taylor (2003-2004), Victoria Shaw (2002-2003), Peter Horry (2001-2002) and Jan Wing (2000-2001).
