Alan L. Warman - Mayor of Ware

Cllr. Alan Warman was elected Mayor for the new Civic year at a Ceremony in The Priory on 16th May.

Alan has lived in Ware since the age of 9. He was born in Hertford County Hospital in January, 1947. For a short time Alan moved to East London with his parents.

When Alan and his parents together with his two sisters Pauline & Janet moved back to Ware, Alan started School at St Mary's Ware, which was then located in Church Street, now the Church Street Surgery.

Before moving on to the Ware Secondary School located in Bowling Road now Christ Church junior School. Ware Secondary School then moved up to Fanhams Common. The School was renamed Trinity.

Leaving school at 15, Alan worked locally in the town and continued his working life within the town and working for Eastern Gas in Hertford & Barnet.

Alan, until this March, 2011, had been on the Voluntary staff at St Paul’s Cathedral for the past 32 years. As a Server, a Wandsman and a working Friend. Alan was appointed to be one of the Trustee’s on the Friends of St Paul’s Council and was presented to the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on appointment. He was appointed President of 1096 (Bishop’s Stortford) Squadron Air Training Corps. Alan is also a Knight Commander of the Military & Hospilter Oder of St Lazarus & a Knight of the Order of St Stanislas.

Alan is a Freeman of the City of London, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and this year, he is Chairman of his Ward Club Queenhithe. He is also a Councillor on East Herts Council for St Mary's Ward and a Town Councillor for the same ward. Alan is married to Diane, who comes from an old Ware Family.

I have a great interest in the Town from all aspects; I want the Town to be promoted throughout my year in office.

Each year the Mayor chooses one or more charities to support during their year of office. This year the Mayor has chosen:

Cllr Phyllis Ballam was elected Deputy Mayor.

The role of Mayor is principally a symbolic one, with the post being held for 12 months, and elected by the full town council. Past mayors include: Edward Bedford (2010-2011, Katherine Little (2009-2010), Phyllis Ballam (2008-2009), George Powell (2007-2008), Terrence Milner (2006-2007), Malcolm Alexander (2005-2006), Phyllis Ballam (2004-2005), Jeanette Taylor (2003-2004), Victoria Shaw (2002-2003), Peter Horry (2001-2002) and Jan Wing (2000-2001).
