New families arrive in Ware

Mum with Passenger It seems to have been a good season for our resident Swan population with more young swans choosing to make homes in the area! One young couple chose to set up home on the South side of Ware between the New River and London Road. On first consideration this appeared to be a strange choice but had the advantage that they were protected from the foxes and unleashed dogs on the Lea side of the New River and also handy to an endless food supply from the London Road residents and other passing admirers!

With some help in nest building from their human neighbours they eventually settled down to lay, incubate and then from May 1st to hatch a brood of five cygnets. The development of this little family has been watched by not only the residents on the road but also many regular passers-by who have interrupted their daily commuting to pay daily visits As the photos show the initial swimming lessons were quite frightening with the cygnets preferring to ride along on Mum's back as much as possible- one of the more adventurous offspring likes to "ride up front" so he can watch the view whilst enjoying the security!
