Was mentioned to me today about a woman who moved her house (timber I believe) from Ware to Norfolk. Around 1985 I imagine. Apparently her house was to be demolished to build a roundabout in Ware (Charvils?) so she decided to dismantle and move to Norfolk. Apparent the local Scouts helpe (what group anyone know)
She was interviewed on telly in 1990 I think as living in a half built house in Norfolk. Anyone shed any light?

Yes, quite right. The lady in question was a Miss May Savidge and her old timber framed house was threatened with demolition to make way for the Charvills roundabout. Watton Road was merely a junction with Baldock Street at the time. But this was 1970, nowhere near as late as the 80's. To save the house she literally dismantled it piece by piece numbered all the parts and moved the entire thing to Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk.
She was quite an old lady then, that's why she made the news at the time. I assume she must have passed on by now but I assume the house is still there. |

I knew of this before but also saw the section on antiques roadshow. They mentioned that she died before the house had been completley rebuilt.

I remember hearing about the little old lady from ware who moved her house bit by bit, it was even on the TV and in newpapers here in the USA. was going to make room for some road or rounabout but it the end the town never had done it
Think Ware, Herts made the news here 3 times in the USA. One was House moving lady, another was a flooding Ware had some years ago and one was about the number of Pubs that used to be in Ware |

I believe at one point there were 52 pubs in Ware so you could visit a different one every Friday for a year. Alas we have fewer now but still a lot more than many towns.

| I think from way, way, way back by the size of the town of Ware and its population, Ware had more pubs than any other town in the World. Wonder how many pubs are now in Ware? know in Ware there are pubs everywhere it seems |

Number of pubs in Ware? I feel a list coming on!! - The Rose and Crown
- The Worppell
- The Old Bulls Head
- The Wine Lodge
- The Albion
- The Tap Bar
- The Abs Bar
- The Vine
- The Punch House
- The Cannons Tavern
- The Angel
- The Victoria
- The John Gilpin
- The High Oak
- The Rifle Volunteer
- The Spread Eagle
- The Saracens Head
- The Waterfront
I expect I have missed one or two but its an impressive list it must work out to about 1 to 1000 per head of population which is still a good number for any town. Unless you know different?
To get back on topic why did the lady move with this many pubs in Ware? |

FB
I know but that is not just pubs in Ware but includes the surrounding area, I reason they have to be in comfortable walking distance and the likes of The Feathers I do not consider is.
I still wonder why May did not rebuild in Ware? |
