Hi

Can anyone recommend a cycle route to Buntingford that avoids as many roads as possible?

Yes, there are plenty of routes on OS Explorer 194. You have bridleways via Dane End, Mundens and Aspenden, or via Latchford, Standon, Braughin, Hay St... Just get the map - possibly rent it at the library(?) Also, check Google Maps for freebie method....

Cuthbert. If you can let me know your e-mail address, I'll try and e-mail you a couple of maps showing 2 off road routes to Buntingford, one that passes by the East side of the town and the other to the West. I tried to copy and paste them onto this reply, but it didn't work. The forum admin people can let you have my e-mail address.

Post them to share on Ware Online so we can all benefit from the routes. I fancy doing that trip too.

Now I am a towny but have recently been donated a bike - first time on a bike for over 40 years and loving it. I'm venturing far and wide and am confused by some of the signs I see in the countryside.

(Before the thread goes off on one about consideration for others [again!!] I'm sure we are all aware that there are incosniderate folk out there and we all have our ideas how to deal with them.)

Cycling on footpaths is illegal, so I don't do that unless there are specific permissions so to do - anyway there are lots of obstacles. Cycling on bridlepaths, that's Ok, so I do that. Cycling on byways - I guess that's Ok too. Towpath is Ok - see note re consideration of other above.

Some of the signs I see, particularly in the Sacombe area are paths with County Council signs which point along a route which has also been signed by the local landowners as 'Private - Keep Out'. This confusion doesn't seem to exist around Easneye where the County Council signs are not at odds with local landowner signs.

Anybody else find this anomolous?

Are you sure that they are not just public foothpaths or public bridleways? You can't cycle on the former but I'm not certain about the latter.

Something like this page?

www.wareonline.co.uk/tourism/cycling.asp

I've got the maps from redrich382 which I will add to this page.
If others can submit routes, please send them through.
