Technically more of a Herts issue than a Ware one, but I did notice it on a commute from Harlow to Ware.
En route from Harlow there is normally a large road sign with a stag announcing your arrival in Hertfordshire (on the causeway route out of Harlow). Some delight has sprayed ROT across it ages ago, so a new sign has been a long time coming.
A new one has arrived this week - it is unimpressive, long and thin, without any presence or impact, apart from its curious proclaiment along the lines of
"Welcome to Hertfordshire - County of Opportunity"
Does anyone else find this bland, nondescript and faintly odd description slightly offensive? It looks like it came out of some book of trite strap lines and that no one put any thought into it at all. Is this the county slogan? Could they not be more imaginative? Have they been to Hertfordshire - i.e. could they not think of anything at all more relevant? Or am I being fussy? I was just a bit bemused by the randomness of the description... |

It's one of those meaningless slogans that all counties have nowadays. Ours is rubbish because Hertfordshire doesn't have any identity what's so ever!
An alternative could be Welcome to Hertfordshire - The Commuter County!
Or Welcome to Hertfordshire - Barry Norman lives here you know!!! |

Personally I found it underwhelming and very uncreative. Better to say nothing.
Can WoL come up with some positive, engaging proposals ? |

| To illustrate how noteworthy Hertfordshire is, the entire county warrants just three pages in the Lonely Planet Guide to England. That's three pages out of 697. |

697/48 = 14.5
The entire book is 844 pages, but I didn't think it a reasonable analysis if I included the index, glossary, itinaries, history, culture, environment, food and drink etc.
Herts fares a little better than Berkshire (1 page), Bedfordshire (2 pages) and Buckinghamshire (2 pages). In fact looking at those figures, the Three Counties (as they are often collectively called) of Herts, Beds and Bucks only get 7 pages. Even if you look at the BBC News regional pages we are the only three counties to be grouped together, none apparently justifying our own sections.
In spite of this, I would strongly recommend The Lonely Planet Guide To England. The general pages mentioned above can be quite amusing as they are clearly aimed at foreigners and give an interesting perspective as to how others might see us.
But I digress from the topic under discussion.
"County Of Opportunity" does appear to be a description which few in the county would identify with IMHO. I wonder what (if any) market research was done before adopting this. Interesting that it doesn't appear on the County Council's own website either. |

Hertfordshire would hardly feature in a Lonely Planet guide. Far too many people living here to be lonely ! |

| There is a sign in Hertford at the end of Castle Street that directs Ware towards Hertford town centre. It is on the traffic island, has been there for years. |

| I have just travelled through Cambridgeshire, and made a point to look at their sign, which is Welcome to Cambridgeshire, with county emblem, and the same with Suffolk, Welcome to Suffolk and their emblem. That's all that is necessary I believe. |

How about "Welcome to Hertforshire where you can Letch for all your worth, people called Steven get older and a senior clergyman has a river crossing" ?
I'll get my coat! |
