does anyone remember or more importantly have any links or references to an explosion that took place at Mill Acres. I remember it took out half of the side of a flat above the entrance gate and it was reported to be caused by an electrically heated water heater. I'm keen to get any recorded information about the event, especially any with details of the cause. Many thanks

| Yes I recall that - in the flat over the archway in Station Road. A friend of my son subsequently purchased the flat after repair. I think it was covered in the local papers at the time. What do you need to know ? |

Oh thats great, I tried the Mercury Archives but come up with nothing. As far as I'm aware it was an unvented hot water tank, its a shame its missing that detail. There doesn't appear to be any other record of exploding unvented cylinders in the UK so its quite unique. |

It was my daughters flat where the explosion took place, can you tell me for what reason that you are interested. I to trawled the Internet to see if it had happened before with a unvented hot water cylinder but i could not find anything. After the incident we was told exactly what happened. |

Basically there are no recorded incidents of exploding UV cylinders in the UK, but I suspect this is more of a case of poor records then it not actually happening. The HSE are not exactly famous for accurate investigations and reporting. UV cylinders are perfectly safe when correctly installed, but they're becoming increasingly installed by DIYers and unqualified "individuals". The information "may" be used to raise awareness, but as I say its just an interest thing at this point. I would love to know as to the actual cause as they don't just explode as there should be 3 tiers of safety protection. Rumour I heard was that the safety pipe was capped and the thermostat was linked out.....but as I say it was a rumour.. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated and treated with confidence it required. Mick |
