Yet another win for Hertford, 29 - 12, after being 6 - 12 down. Its all change at the top! With Dorking and Hertford winning and Barnes loosing Hertford and Dorking go up one place each to put Dorking on top and Hertford second and Barnes take a two place drop to third. With only three points between them consistency is the key to a successful season. Match report will hopefully follow. |

Match report.
HRFC entertained a resurgent Gravesend on Sat at Hoe lane. Our visitors are playing their first season in National League 3 and have adapted extremely well to the additional physical rigours of the competition. In my mind the surprise team of the league showing great form at home and away. It therefore should have come as no surprise that return fixture was going to be more of a contest than when we played them earlier in the season.
That said HRFC reverted to their slow start. Baz won the toss and played away from the bungalow and HRFC started ok. Winning possession on their 22m and going through a few phases and patiently building pressure.
An infringement at the breakdown and Rob Richardson kicked the 3 points. As far as the game plan was concerned it all looked as though it was going to plan. But that was as far as it went in the first 40mins.The half was punctuated by knock ons, HRFC trying too hard and Gravesend playing all the rugby. They deservedly took the lead after a series of pick and drives that took them to within 10 m from our line and then they span it wide away from the club house to score far outwide right. Conversion kicked 3-7.
This seemed to bring more belief into the hosts and they started playing with greater accuracy in the off load and got their No 8 Sox Stevens and their skipper Jamie Forsyth running close to the breakdown and making holes. Another Gravesend attack and our defence around the ruck was not as tight as it should have been and Gravesend hooker Terry Papworth ran a great angle to sythe through the defence and score out wide by the club house. conv missed 3-12. HRFC were not in the game, and things could have got worse when HRFC trying to push the game got turned over and Gravesend skipper dropped the ball from 5 m out when it looked easier to score than not.HRFC tried to settle things and a great run by Ian Hardcastle of 40m took him to the try line and Gravesend were penalised for not rolling away and Richardson took the points 6-12.
At last HRFC were starting to play with consistency and another penalty at the breakdown gave Richardson another opportunity to close the gap.9-12 at Half time..Not a reflection of how well Gravesend had played
2nd Half....Will the real HRFC please strand up....From the kick off things were more accurate and more intense.
South started running with ball in hand and breaking the game line, coupled with Billy Johnsons work rate things started playing dividends. HRFC moved the defence left to right and as the Gravesend forwards started to tire a quick ball from the right towards the club house saw James Storey beat his man and pass to Ian Crompton who duly scored in the corner.Conv narrowly missed...14-12..
Same format after 20 mins..South banging a hole in the Gravesend defence..Hankin making a dive for the line, but just help up short, recycled ball to Manion who ghosts through the defence to score.Rob having a bad day with the boot missed the conv.
Gravesend forwards were starting to tire and the video will prove Baz gave out a bit of a hammering in the set piece which started to sap their energy. An infringement at the breakdown and Manion kicked the only decent kick since he got off the plane right into the corner.Catch and drive and Toto Schillaci barges over 24-12.Conv missed. The game seemingly safe the hunt was on for a bonus point try and the omnipresent Chris Rainbow duly delivered.Gravesend scrum near their own line and Arran Macdougall immediately making his presence felt by gathering a loose ball.recycling it..getting on the end of another drive and Chris Rainbow out gases the defending winger to score far right corner.29-12.Final result
Nick Lloyd DoR "We need to be more clinical and pay greater respect to all sides in the league. There are no easy games home or away. That said it was a great 2nd half performance winning 20 nil and securing a bonus point"
Wise words in deed for at that time Nick had no idea that Barnes had lost away to Staines
