"Rock" to you. Down under it works different, you place your order and they then cook it there are no fish or chips sitting around everything cooked has already been paid for. We always used to use Wrights 99% of the time its good to hear the standard has been maintained. |

Please note I am not taking anything away from Wrights, far from it, they are indeed excellent and known in the industry for being excellent. It is just a bit of a slap when someone makes a comment saying "Officially" unless it can be backed up.
What I do know is that they have got a 5 star award from Seafish who are the industry body and this award is incredibly hard to get and any shop that gets it deserves all the praise, but getting as far as our shop did in the Seafish Fish and Chip shop of the year competition, could be construed as Officialy the best in Hertfordshire (for this year anyway).
Btw - I use the pronoun 'our' when referring to the shop, when convenient. I am a typical woman, when it is good, it is 'ours', when it goes wrong, it is 'yours'. Technically I have no financial interest in the shop and earn nothing from it but I take an interest as it is my partners livelihood
My OH shop will put in for it next year, you do have to apply - it is not just given out, but still getting it is difficult. Hopefully his success in the competition will mean he has a good chance of getting the award.
The certificate only had 4 categories on it and it was more of a "well done" than anything else. |

There appears to be a wide range of jokes to chip away at.
btw I am a dab hand at these and really really annoying when I am in his shop. My favourite recently was when he ran out of Rock and everytime a customer asked for it, I piped up (to the music of All of of Love, by Air Supply): I am all out of Rock, I could do you some Haddock Or maybe some Cod But they don't taste the same way.
Eventually his patience ran out and I was told to shut up (my singing is truly awful). I have the whole of that song with the lyrics changed to suit a Fish and Chip shop. It makes me laugh (probably only me though) |

| As a matter of interest, what was the award? Is there a link to a website or something? |

| It is the Seafish Quality Award and is an excellent award to get, and Helen.m is right, they are the first Hertfordshire shop to get the award. It does seem very difficult to find details of the award or what it entails unless you are in the trade. |

Semantics. Our Shop got through to the regional finals of the fish and chip shop of the year award and were the only Hertfordshire shop to do so, that could be construed as the best in Hertfordshire. We haven't applied for the Seafish Award yet but will do later this year I think. We should get it due to the F&C shop of the year award and all the reasons we got through but even assuming we do, we will never be the first one in Hertfordshire to do so. Wrights will always have that honour.
(Note the use of 'Our' and 'we' again, it suits me as it is a positive but when I get fed up of his hours it is 'his' shop)
My OH keeps wanting to try Wrights but he is always working when they are open. |

This looks like it. So it appears to be down to high standards in hygene, storage etc - all obviously very important - but not necessarily meaning the best tasting, maybe (though of course freshness etc will usually lead to good flavour). Not to denigrate Wrights' achievement, but I think I'd be more impressed by a chippie that had done well in Fish and Chip Shop of the Year.
Kate28 - can you send me a PM telling me which "your" chippy is? I'd like to try it if I'm ever over Stevenage way. |

If you are praising the chippy then of course it is 'mine' Ha Ha.
It is W J Rowe, in Bedwell, Stevenage. Not the easiest to find but we now have regulars from all the surrounding villages. Be warned, the food doesn't actually travel well to Ware. It is a high efficiency frying range which means the chips are cooked with less fat in them and it is the oil that retains the heat, not the potato in chips. So a healthier chip (and in opinion tastier) with less oil means they go cold quicker.
Just to reiterate, I am actually not an owner or even employed there - I work in London, but I do live with the owner. If anyone does go in, then mention you are from Ware, you will be given a warm welcome. Actually that is silly, he welcomes anyone. And remember, he has heard good things about Wrights. |

| It really is a bit far to travel back to Ware, is the shops only take-away or is there a restaurant as well. If restaurant will certainly try it next time in Stevenage. |

| It is too far to bring it back to Ware, I actually recently moved to Hertford (sorry.....) but we never bought food back to Ware or Hertford as it is just too far. And there is no restaurant, deliberately. In that particular area of Stevenage, whilst a proven market for takeaway food, there are elements in that community who would buy a bag of chips between them and hang out in there all night which can appear threatening and put off customers. This is something he does not want so it is only a take away. Unless you are in Stevenage for a reason then stick to Wrights, you cannot go wrong really. |
