I'm planning to cycle from Ware to Greenwich in the next few weeks. Does anyone know how many miles it is and what pitfalls if any ? |

Actually with the coming of the better weather I'm seriously looking at cycling to work a few times a month via the towpath. I work at Shoreditch and it's not that far from the Lea along the canal to Shoreditch. So if the timing fit's I'd be interested in seeing just how much it will kill me!

| Pitfalls? I can't vouch for the south side of the river but there aren't any pitfalls I can think of, it's an easy flat ride all the way. |

It's been a while since I rode down that far but from what I remember the surface isn't that good for bikes. It can be rough and that makes it harder going. Some of it is very nice but as you near london it gets very run down indusrial. There may well be lots of fishermen and the result risk of getting hooked! My route to work is over 40Km which is 30 odd miles so it's a fair run.

I dont know if it ever happened or will do, but there was talk of the tow path being made into a cycle route all the way into London for the Olympics

I've done it a couple of times, and remember it being 28 miles to Canary Wharf. A corking ride! It's fairly easy, but has a couple of potential snags. Just before the Olympic stadium, you can branch west and pick up the Hertford Union Canal, or you can carry on and then head down the Limehouse Cut which, in my view is far more interesting.
However, if you opt for the latter, the towpath stops for the A11/A12 interchange which you have to cross without any crossing assistance. It's OK, but a little off-putting first time you come across it. But then you're back to the towpath on the other side. Such a shame, as it's really quite confusing there.
But don't be put off, it really is a rewarding ride, and you see so much. For me, the best bits are all further down where it's all industrial... |

As above, except Greenwich foot tunnels are shut,so you're in for a long detour! You can't take your bike on the DLR(unless it's folding) http://www.greenwich.gov.uk/Greenwich/Travel/foot-tunnels.htm check this site before setting off. Oh and dont cycle around the Plaza in front of the O2 they get very upset I seem to remember. All in should take about 6 hours for the round trip back to Ware. |

Thats because the best pubs are here in Ware! Nobody wants to admit they'd spend 6 hours riding away and then back to the best pubs!
