Very much in favour of the Lido and would be angry if it were to close. How does joining your Facebook group ensure it's survival? Is it a direct action group? Collecting signatures for a petition? Please explain. |

| I just joined the group, it is just a way of getting people's attention and this is not a bad thing. |

Facebook Groups are for lazy, sitting-down activism.
They allow people think they are actively campaigning and doing something useful, when actually, they're just clicking a button.
At best, they are good for publicising the Lido to everyone who know about the Lido.
The only way to support the Lido is by going down there and using it when it opens. |

I agree Craig. Next we'll have a facebook Lido app like the farm and all the other time wasting facebook activities! Amazingt hat people will spend hours each day tending an online farm but have no interest in growing veg in their garden. Weird or what!

Definately back the Ware Open Air Swimming Pool. But I too am not on facebook/twitt etc. etc. By the way New Boy - on your petition can you add for..... 1 small diving/bombing board at the far end - we used to have several and this would generate interest, cheers! K 'bomber' Bong |

| OK the facebook group doesn't do much but I think it is a good way of advertising the lido and bringing it back to peoples attention. Your friends will see you have joined. It can't do any harm. |

Hey, I'm all in favour of armchair social activism if it saves me getting off my arse but remember, these campaigns rarely happen in a vacuum, but are part of a wider protest; the facebook group can be part of a wider campaign to save the pool.
Campaigning on-line does empower people, raises awareness, and influences decisions; it helps get the message out. Look at how big businesses are all using social networking sites, like Twitter and Facebook, to advertise their products, services, campaigns etc
Interesting blog about the power of facebook campaign groups here:

| I'm with Ian, WoL is for LOUDLY taking STRONG stances of objection and support in a lazy way. It quickly gets very messy when people suggest you have actual meetings....:-) |

| Ah, but how many would have run down to a record store to buy the music, the xmas number 1 thing all worked online. |

Is this not an example of someone trying something, posting on here and getting shouted down and borderline insulted. I am not a great advocate of Facebook, I think I just don't get it. It does have a few uses but not a big part of my life and I have never even seen Twitter but.........New Boy is doing more than I have. Publicising it and who knows, maybe the facebook group may start arranging trips to it. Facebook also has a young audience and it is a good publicity tool for that group of people.
Why the negativity? On another thread someone posted about people being afraid to post, got negative comments about their source but I would say I am one of those people. I wont post very often as too scared. |

Hi Kate, I have re-read through the thread after your comments and can see nothing to justify them, the forum is a discussion area where everyone can have an opinion, we will and do remove anything offencive, there is no reason to be scared to post. |

No, it's absolutely not and I can't see that even if I try really hard.
You are going to have to point out the shoutunbg down and borderline insult, cos I can't see it.
The simple fact is that just by posting the topic on Ware Online has already raised the profile of the Lido. We've slightly changed topic a touch about how good/bad Facebook campaigning is. SDarcy's post is very intertesting and made me rethink.
It's how discussions work. The alternative is to have a forum filled with "I agree" posts. Shall we try it for a few days and see what happens?
So let's get down to the Lido for a splash (when it opens) and move on to discussing the next big issue in Ware. |

Although there were many cynical comments about armchair facebook campaign groups, i will remind people to visit or sign up to the facebook support group
http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/group.php?gid=302517819872
A support group that has done fantastic volunteer work to give the place a spring clean; produce a poster campaign advertising the summer opening; mentions in the Tesco magazine etc.
The Priory Lido is a fantastic asset to our town - please support it this summer. |

I shall support it by using it - I'm not into facebook. Hopefully this year, if it is well supported, - it can open for longer in 2011 ?? |
