Hi,

Where's the nearest local forest to Ware that I can stick wellies on the kids and trample along muddy paths etc without meeting a farmer with a shotgun?

Of course, you could always wait for Waltham Forest to come to Ware (see separate thread).

Some of the wooded walks just past Wareside are good. I had a bimble in the rain on my own this afternoon...It is often possible to see Edible snails in the rain like this 8 cm bruiser...

Hi Matt

If the children are over 10 years of age, then why not join us on the CHIPs sponsored walk this afternoon. We have 5km and 10km routes plus tea and cake! Registration is £10.

If the children are younger then I second Broxbourne Wood.

Thanks for all your comments, will look up waterford marsh and Balls park. I have been to Broxbourne Woods, hits the mark entirely. Just wondered if there was something equivalent closer to home. Even the towpath gets a bit boring after a while!

Similar distance from Ware to Broxbourne woods, but Bencroft Woods down White Stubbs Lane (past Paradise Park) is really nice. There are a couple of car parks on the left.

Waterford Marsh seconded. Ans if you're lucky, you'll get to take a photo like this one I took a few years ago of our son "in action"

How about Sherrardspark Woods in Welwyn Garden City? http://sherrardsparkwood.com/
Another possible, not too far away, is Northaw Great Wood http://www.fongw.org.uk/

That picture reminds me of when we were holidaying on a narrowboat in Wales. Youngest son was steering and turning the boat round when he knocked the side of the canal. (drivers end for want of a better description!) The paddle knocked him on the chest and pushed him into the water. Wish I'd had a camera on him at that time! My eldest son and I couldn't stop laughing and fortunately the water wasn't very deep so all he needed was a quick shower! Even now when I think of it it makes me laugh.
