Mayor for a Day Event

The Mayors of Ware
Mayor Jan Wing
Mayor of Ware, Jan Wing today (30-Sept-00) shared her duties with 15 young people from Ware schools (and her daughter and son!) The party of 17 children, Jan, husband John, Judi Thomson (deputy Mayor) and husband Alan plus Rachel Foy (Priory Event co-ordinator) had a full day of Mayoral duties planned.

The day started with a mini-council meeting to let everyone know the agenda for the day. The group then moved on to Hertford Regional college to plant a mini garden in front of the Main building. A little muddier and after a little digging the party moved on to pay a brief visit to the new Rialto Crane Mead Development (opened by Mayor Jan Wing on Friday 29 September) and a look around one of the "Le Metro" design apartments.

Visit to Glaxo_Wellcome

The next step in the days appointments was a visit to Glaxo Wellcome where Hannah Colvill officially opened an £11 million renovation of a building on the Research and Development site, this was done with an official cutting of ribbon and speeches to mark the occasion.

A special lunch was then attended by the Mayoral party at the Priory when they were joined by Cllr Richard Ovenden (Mayor of Hertford) and Cllr Jan Richardson (Mayor of Bishop's Stortford) and some of the children's parents.

Visit to Burage Court

The final duty of the "mini-Mayors" was to visit Burgage Court, a sheltered housing scheme in Ware where the children met the residents and served a cream tea.

All through the day the party was accompanied by their own photographer and the children had in insight into what "being Mayor was like".

At the end of the day - after many photographs, Mayor Jan said " All of the children were tremendous, they have made one of my days as Mayor very special, and I hope they have enjoyed all of the activities as much as I have! I hope, when I visit the schools in the next few months that my Mayors will help me when I try to tell the schools what a Mayor has to do!"
