Local Covid-19 death figures released

Saturday 2 May 2020

The Office of National Statistics have released data showing that 15 people from Ware died from Covid-19 in the period from 1st March to 17th April.

The overall number of people who died during the period was 52, meaning that the virus is implicated in 28% of all deaths. This figure is above the 22.5% figure for England and Wales overall.

The death rate for Covid-19 in England and Wales is 36.2 per 100,000 people, when adjusting for size and age structure of the population.

The information used to produce the statistics is based on details collected when certified deaths are registered with the local registration office. In England and Wales, deaths should be registered within five days of the death occurring, but there are some situations (such as referral to a coroner) that result in later registration. Therefore, there may be some deaths involving COVID-19 that occurred in the period 1 March to 17 April 2020 that are yet to be registered, meaning they will not be included in this analysis.

Figures on deaths published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) differ from those produced by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the UK's public health agencies for two main reasons: the time between death and reporting of the death and the ONS's wider inclusion criteria.
