Yes the fan speed regulator is what causes the humming. Its a "feature" on the mod air flow units like you have(the 1 to 9 thermostat is what comes with the J&s MAF units) due to the way it alters the fan speed by voltage modulation. Although luckily if all is working now then its like...

Sounds possibly like the fan speed regulator is playing up. If you replace it with a new one you will also need a new electronic panel as the old and new versions are incompatible, unless you can find an old version from somewhere, but then if the electronic panel ever goes your back to square one! ...

cant think why anyone would be cold calling selling heat recovery. Its not really feasible for retrofit, its a new build thing tied in usually with sealing up houses like passivhaus etc... I would imagine any cold calling would be selling air to water heat pumps especially as the new RHI tariffs wer...

Air to Air heat exchangers? We talking Air source heat pumps i presume? as opposed to heat recovery systems. Most ASHP systems in the uk are air to water. Air to air would be similar to a air conditioning unit working in reverse.

I use a dropbox account which I use to save everything too. Anytime my computer goes funny it just gets reset to factory settings

Whoever you get out to replace it make sure they fit an 'Incoloy' or similar element that is designed to be used in hard water areas as the standard copper jacketed ones seem to fail in this area in about two or three years, lost count of the number of elements I've had to replace before I discover...
