Stansted expansion

Post by Andy B »

I was reading recently in the press that an application has been made for future expansion but I cannot remember where I read it.
Did I dream this or is it a possibility again :?:

I'm wondering if you're referring to Stansted Airports's submission to The Airports Commission and Stop Stansted Expansion's application for a judicial review.

The Airports Commision was set up by the government to examine the need for additional UK airport capacity and recommend to government how this can be met in the short, medium and long term. As part of this process, all the UK's airport operators were invited to submit options on how airport capacity might be increased.

That maybe right Steve but it read like it was an application so I shall have to try and find it again.
And I have it was an action to stop Stansted's expansion in the High Court.

Unfortunately, the press do have a habit of bandying the word "plan" about, when what they really mean is "aspiration". It confuses the hell out of Joe Public, who usually skim read such reports and and then misinterprets them. There's no formal planning application and won't be one until the Commission have reported and the government has formulated a policy.

Thanks Steve that reads slightly different but still leaves Stansted in the frame for a potential major increase in traffic.

Google News pointed me at this as well. Stansted is campaigning for flights for around 6m long haul passengers. That apparently is the number of long haul passengers each year in their catchment area that use eathrow, Gatwick etc. I am really torn on this one. I don;t like the idea of Stansted getting bigger and busier, but I would love not to have to go to Heathrow to get to the US, which I have to do regularly for work.

Yes, I'd be very surprised if we don't see an expansion at Stansted now that the operator has changed. I'm sure they will try and take away as much competition form BAA as thy feasibly can, though whether they'll get the major operators to move from Heathrow is an interesting question.

I must say as an aside, from a passenger's point of view it's good having an airport that isn't running at full capacity; when we had the high winds at the end of October (the one time we flew this year!!!) we were delayed but still managed to fly out whereas Heathrow were cancelling lots of flights.
