1880 Ware

Post by Andy B »

While out walking my dog in the Richmond ranges we went to the old reservoir which supplied water to Richmonds residents in 1880 and did so for 40 years and I was wondering what Ware's population was in the 1880's? From the notice I read at the reservoir it said that there were about 136 properties in Richmond but I would have thought Ware had more?

I had a quick look at 1881 Census for Ware - unfortunately couldn't locate the overall summary sheets but Ware was then split into 8 enumeration districts. Sorry I wasn't going to go through these counting properties and households (!) but the smallest of these had 65 properties listed and covered an area of North Ware, including Cundalls Farms and Fanhams Hall.

I did a search on ancestry.com based on the 1881 census for people listed as living in Ware, Hertfordshire. The search returned 5.816 records.

A few random population figures:

1861: 4,884 (Bradshaw's Handbook of 1861)
1863: 5,002 (Bradshaw's Handbook of 1863)
1876: 4,917 (Thorne's handbook to The Environs of London) [Note that this referred to the town alone. In the whole parish, including 202 in the Union Workhouse, 5,403)

Thanks guys that's quite interesting as the population in Richmond NZ at that time was around 400 and by 1905 had increased to 570 whereas today the population of Ware and Richmond NZ are comparable.
