Virgin media email sign-in

Post by Mel »

Anyone else having to go through an extra layer of security with virgin email please? Every time I have tried to log on today I have had to tick a box confirming I am not a robot! Topped off just now by having half a dozen photos to look through and tell them which ones contain a fish! I tweeted to them and I'm told it's an extra layer of security to confirm my identity but my patience is running thin so I think quite soon I shall be using another email address! And that's putting it mildly!

Yes Mel I first noticed it yesterday.Like you I find it very annoying and rather juvenile, although if it is a extra security help I suppose we should be grateful, but I do wonder if it really is necessary.

I've had an email from Virgin Media saying they will be transferring all email in the next 3 months to their own service. They are no longer going to be using Google. So I guess the changes are to do with that.

Same here, going to try and leave it until they migrate but it's going to be hard, driving me up the wall! Now I've got the extra layer of pictures to pick out

I would always advise against using an ISP's email service. Much better to use a webmail service such as Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo etc IMHO.

The migration from Gmail to Virgin's own in-house system may throw up issues and you may lose filters and other configurations specific to your account.

Lastly, does Virgin mail not allow you to stay logged in between sessions?

I only use the ntl address for family and friends and I've got hotmail that I use for 'business' so I might transfer over. I tweeted Virgin and they said you should only need to do it once! I'm trying to keep logged in between sessions to make it easier so we'll see how that goes.

Interested to know the thinking behind this.

I'd be interested too - especially as it seems all my friends who use Yahoo mail are constantly being hacked and send out spam emails. I used the virgin media email as I use a couple of sites that require an ISP email address and won't accept others such as Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail because of this problem and because they want to know exactly who is downloading their stuff.

funny thing is I can access the virgin email from my phone without any hassle. Lots of websites won't accept hotmail and so on, including this one!

This guy puts it better than I could ...

If you want to change ISPs you're going to have to change your email address and lose all your current email.
Also, webmail providers will often have much more effective spam filters, as well as more generous allowances for inbox and attachment size.
