Windows 10

Post by JudieT »

OK I accept this isn't Ware related, but thought I'd ask some of you computer experts out there whether or not it's worth upgrading to Windows 10? I've read some mixed reports in the media and am still on Windows 7 and not happy with all the changes that that meant. The biggest problem I can see with 10 (apart from the changes to the look and feel which are always unsettling) is the future upgrades that will not be optional thereby taking away another layer of choice from us the users.
Any comments gratefully received - thanks J.

Wait and see what happens post release.

Don't upgrade on 29th July, but make a mental note to review opinion again in 6 months, and decide then whether to upgrade.

If you are happy with what you have i would advise waiting awhile before deciding whether you want or need the extra bits and bobs windows 10 offer.

Some older systems may not perform very well despite what Microsoft say.....

If you decide to upgrade, backup ALL your data to a pen drive or external Hard Drive.

I'd agree. Reserve your copy via the icon in the system tray. Wait till it's launched and let the dust settle.
Read the reviews and decide if it offers anything you just have to have.
If it doesn't then stick with Windows 7 which you know works with all your applications and hardware.

For all users I'd seriously look at upgrading to an SSD system drive. The prices have dropped a lot and the difference in performance is remarkable. You can make an old system seem much newer for a modest investment.

I've been testing the Windows 10 Preview version and must say I like it. But then I get on ok with windows 8.1 (windows 8.0 was pretty horrid)
I expect to upgrade to windows 10 a few weeks after it's out. A larger internal SSD (1TB) will be purchased and Windows 10 will go on that. Leaving my current Windows 7 SSD as a fall back just in case...

For those of you that don't know what an "SSD System Drive" is, it's a solid state hard disk. It uses the same technology as a memory card or USB stick. Unlike a conventional hard disk it has no moving parts and is therefore significantly faster.

Pat-H, just be careful going down this route. The jury is still (I understand) out on whether your existing licence code will be irrevocably updated to W10, leaving your W7 installation un-runnable.

Having bought a new computer back in January I've got Windows 8:1 unfortunately so I'll be upgrading but not for 6 months after the launch. Is it best to reserve Windows 10, I keep being asked by I've been told to wait and that I won't lose out? I don't want to automatically get an update when it comes out.

All excellent advice -Always wait until you have checked that you can obtain Updated Drivers etc for all your Hardware for any new system. I mention this as I have fallen foul of this in the past and had to purchase a new Printer & scanner. In my case Epson never did produce an updated driver for a multifunction which was barely 3 years old.
Like everyone else on here it will be at least 6 months before I even consider upgrading to any new Operating System
