"Cloud" based applications (the software isn't on your computer its accessed via the internet) are ok but little use if on the move.
Also most software nowadays does regular checks that your activation of the software is valid. So needs internet access to do that.
Many will still run for a few days or longer if it can't check your activation but eventually it will stop working.

Looks like you have Office 365 Home Premium that uses "Click-to-run" technology where components of the product are downloaded from this "cloud" & yes, requires you to be online at all times! You'd need to obtain the full version of Office Home & Student 2013 to avoid this issue.

Agreed, they don't tell you these things in the shop. How expensive is that then I wonder! Once I've upgraded to Windows 10 I'll have to have a look.
