Bridge Repairs Are Dangerous
The repairs to the bridge at Amwell End are a cause for concern to pedestrians.
We are being forced to walk past The Bridgehouse, around the corner past some crash barriers to cross a very busy road just round a blind corner.
There are hundreds of people who have to walk to and from the station every day and having to make a dash when they think there is a gap in traffic. It is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
The contractors should be forced to set up some temporary traffic control, either traffic lights, or some sort of lollipop man.
Any thoughts on how this could be raised/implemented?

Sounds like a Town Centre Issue to me.
Try mailing the Town Centre Manager and see what he suggests.

I agree, the traffic control down that end of town is appalling. I was trying to turn right, and (in my car) totally unable to see any traffic approaching from the right. I had to rely on the traffic from the left to indicate when free to go.......then make sure I didn't run anyone over crossing the road.
I agree with the previous postings - accident waiting to happen at Amwell End.

The Contractors have implemented traffic control aids. At peak hours they have someone to supervise pedestrians wishing to cross.

I have spoken with the contractors, and I know at least one of the District Councillors has over the safety issue. They do have someone, part of the day, acting as an "lollipop" man, although I don't believe this is sufficient. We have tried to persuade them to instal a proper temporary crossing but so far with no luck, but will keep pressing.

I make this journey twice a day (to and from the station) in 'rush hour'. Since these works started 2 weeks ago, I have seen a 'lollipop man' only once!

I drive to work between 8 and 9 o'clock every day using Viaduct Road and a 'Lollipop person' has been there each day for the past few weeks. I then leave the town via the same road between half past five and six in the evening, when i also see him every time i drive past. Today i was impressed to find that not only was he wearing a high visiblilty fluorescent yellow jacket, but also carrying a Stop Sign too.
I by no means agree with all the roadworks in the town at the moment as they make it inconvenient for both shoppers, workers and commuters alike, however the contractors working on the Viaduct Road site do seem to be doing the best they can to alleviate problems for local pedestrians.

This 'lollipop person' must work very short hours then!
As I say, I attempt to cross the road there twice a day on my walk to and from the station at 8am and at 7pm and have only seen someone there once. These are of course the busiest times for London commuters - I would imagine that by 9am there are far fewer pedestrians.
These lollipop people need to be in place then much earlier and much later...or else a temporary pedestrian crossing is needed.

With regard to the 'lollipop' man, there are actually more than one. I drive through the town at different times throughout the day and 99% of the time there is someone there.
I understand that it is a great inconvenience to the drivers and pedestrians with the bridge repairs but people are losing trade in Amwell End, so think how they must feel.
Think yourself lucky you can cross the road and you're not an invalid.

Yes - I saw the lollipop man this morning - and he helped us cross the road - result!!!
In answer to Saffron, I'm not sure why I should consider myself lucky that I'm not an invalid just because I had the temerity to complain about a dangerous road crossing??

how long are the bringe repairs going to take ? Why are they necessary ? No doubt due to the number of large trucks which drive through Ware town and surrounding area. Heavy lorries should be excluded from the entering the area. Simple as that .

I'm glad that the lollipop man has been spotted by someone other than myself! I was beginning to wonder whether i have been hallucinating!
With regard to prohibiting heavy goods vehicles from using the town, I cannot see how this will help the town at all. One of the main arguements for reducing the amount of roadworks in the High Street is to stop the town from stagnating and losing trade. To suggest preventing large Delivery Vehicles from supplying the town's shops is absolutley ludicrous. Larger companies such as Tesco and Boots, and indeed amny of the town's smaller traders, require large vehicles to have access to their premises. Without daily deliveries, firms would move out of Ware High Street causing great loss of jobs, amenities and local services.
I would also like to know what arrangements you would suggest for refuse collection in the town without use of large Dust Carts?
If all Heavy Goods Vehicles were banned from the town, Ware would practically be wiped off the map.

In answer to tonyappleton, I was purely making a statement that at least he has the use of his legs and can get to the station. A friend of mine is in a wheelchair and can go no further than the video shop now, with ease, as she can not get up and down the kerb. And this has nothing to do with the lollipop man as there are now 4 roads to cross to get to Amwell End. As I say (to anyone not just tonyappleton), think yourself lucky.
I would also like to know what they are actually doing to the bridge. I know they say strengthening it and as ray has commented, it is because of the heavy goods vehicles. I quite agree with Rachael in that Ware would be nothing without the few larger stores that we have and that there are quite a few lorries in the town throughout he day but what answer is there to this? Does ray have the answers?
