I always see lots of cyclists along the tow path. Do they belong to a local club? thinking about upping my fitness regime and joining one!

There are some cycle clubs around as I know of some local members but I suspect you're seeing general towpath traffic which does see a lot of cyclists. You are required to obtain a permit to cycle on the towpath and be aware and differ to walkers.

Many don't bother but a permit is required ( I think there are even signs that re-enforce that) They used to be free and I don't think you actually have to display them. You just need to have them!

That's a new one on me, Pat-H. I've cycled that tow path on and off for twenty years and I've never seen a sign and never heard this before. It's not April 1, is it ?

http://www.waterscape.com/things-to-do/cycling/permit you can print a permit at the above location , but I'm sure I read somewhere that it is no longer required.

There is a cycle club called hertfordshire wheelers http://www.waterscape.com/canals-and-rivers/river-lee/cycle-permits-no-longer-required-in-london

Once upon a time you did need a permit, which cost nothing and was a perfect example of wasting public money. You don't need one now, just cycle along, have fun and respect fellow walkers/joggers/cyclists and doggy walkers. I don't know of any local clubs.

For info on cycle clubs, i would suggest trying the local Bike shops. I'm sure Highway Cycles in Amwell End could point you in the direction of any local clubs. I did used to ride with a Mountain Bike Club operated by Marshalls Cycles in Hertford, but that was 10+ years ago, not sure if they still organise runs.

Thanks to Google, [:D] I found this: The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - thus making us one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. http://www.herts-wheelers.org.uk/index.htm Throughout the summer the Wheelers organise a series of "Come and Try Rides". These are shorter than our normal club runs and are purely social and leisure rides open to anyone who cares to join in - members and non-members alike. Usually the rides are an easy-paced 25 mile round-trip from Ware Broadmeads car park and include a stop at a caf or church hall for tea and cakes. The rides normally take place on the first Sunday of each month starting at 2:30pm http://www.herts-wheelers.org.uk/index.htm
