This morning it was lovely to see that the eggs from the nest opposite The Royal Oak had hatched out and the cygnets have taken to the water for their first outing.Even more so was the fact that several people obviously local, worried about them being unable to climb out back to the nest, because of the steep bank constructed a landing step which after half an hour the five cygnets managed to climb out back to their mum on the nest. Well done to them. Attached is a photo of the cygnets climbing out.

That's lovely - thanks for sharing it I was wondering when they'd hatch.

We have at least 4 pairs breeding in the area, with two broods hatched already
Fantastic to read how locals cared for the cygnets

That is so beautiful. Thank you for photo and posting. We used to have so many swans in Ware so lets keep all crossed that these remain with us!

On a related not I came home Friday via the M11 and drove through about 6 miles of slow traffic which I put down to bank holiday getaway (I'm on my motorbike)
I then noticed hazard lights ahead and clear road and as I got to the front of the queue I saw the cause just entering the center reservation. A duck and her ducklings had waddled across all 3 carriageways and the drivers had stopped to let them go.
They still had the south bound carriage way to navigate so wasn't sure they'd all make it....

Just an update on the cygnets. The five and their mum are all swimming around very happily. There are still two eggs in the nest which I should imagine are now sterile. But the good news is that the family are all doing well.

That is so sweet - is it a white cygnet?

The cygnets were hatched by 6th May or earlier- we watched them on Sunday morning struggling to get out of the river while their mother sat on the nest with her remaining 2 eggs and ignored the cheeping babes in the water. Several residents from the flats next door came out with pieces of wood to help them out - well done to the gentleman who nailed the step onto the bank you can see in the photo!
Sadly one was taken by a dog that morning but glad to see that 5 still survived

Not sure exactly where the new nest is, but they seem to swim down as far the first bridge before heading back. Not sure what casued them to leave the old nest.
We pop down and feed them in the evening with the kids. There is also a pair of ducks with a single duckling in the area.
