There is the company that advertises outside Tesco Herts IT Support 01920 462487 or info(at)hertitsupport.co.uk. Or what about the shop by the dry cleaners? Never used either of them though.

Try Teckna. They're based in church street above sfizio. 0844 804 2904 In the sprirt of full disclosure, and realising you have a choice, I do a lot of their pc/laptop/xbox/wii/ps3 repairs for them but you have a choice so I figured I'd give you another! :-)

I tried the number on Friday and it has a dead tone which confirms they have shut down :( I have used them a lot in the past and was hoping to visit again as my laptop is playing up. When trying to connect to the internet it says "DNA lookup failed" and I cannot connect to anything but MSN :( will have to try someone else. Thanks anyway :)

I've used Ideal pc's on numerous occasions and found them very helpful and quick.

quote:That's probably DNS lookup, not DNA. It means that your domain name resolution is not working, for whatever reason. It's most likely a network config error. This in turn could be the result of some unwelcome software having installed itself on your machine. Feel free to PM me if you need further help (click on my name).

Thank you all. Steve I have emailed you. I have a new phone and every time I type D N S it changes it to DNA. I hope my pc is not infected with a virus as I have just renewed my Norton anti virus.

I need someone to look at my PC as it's running very slowly. I have tried iDeal PC's in the High Street but they charge 85 call out (which seems a bit steep). The alternative is to take the PC tower down to the shop which is always a pain having to unplug everything and then transport it to the shop. Anyone got any better ideas?

If your computers running slow there are loads of free software you can download which helps to speed up your pc, i have about 5 different ones i.e. ccleaner, wisecare 365 and others and run them every other day and they clean cache, ram, temp files etc which are the main things that slow down computers, i've got an old Laptop and using these keeps it running fine with a start up from scratch to open web page i.e. goggle etc in about 55 seconds which i think is good for a 5 year old plus laptop.

I can add my vote to CCleaner, very useful tool. Use the option to fix the registry as I've found significant speed increases after using this but make sure you take a backup copy when prompted, though I've never needed the backup copy. Depending on what version of Windows you're running it's also worth running a defragmentation of the hard disk, especially if you're using a lot of space, that can also help speed things up. Do a quick websearch to get further details if you need it.

Another vote for CCleaner, it also allows you to see which programs the pc is running at start up. There are probably a few that aren't needed, This also slows machines down.

Why is my laptop slow, do they slow down with age also? I have run all those tools, defragged, the works.

If you've installed software in past and then uninstalled it sometimes it doesn't get rid of everything, eg I uninstalled itunes and I still then found 5 other elements within the hard drive relevant to it so had to uninstall each one, could be u have loads of dead programs which have left residue behind, also look at the start up programs as well, I had loads of programs that started when I switched on which were not needed and took them off, another bit of good software is advance system care, its free and puts a box in the top corner where you can open and clean ram as and when u want to, otherwise I'd check you ram specs and hardware drivers are up to date

A quick win, assuming the computer is not experiencing any other major issues other than slowness, is to upgrade the memory (RAM). Particularly for older computers where today's software updates tend to overwhelm the resources available within yesterday's computers!

Thanks everyone. A few things to try there. I was particularly interested in brassdoorknob's tip of upgrading the RAM. My PC is very old, at least 10 years, and my well require additional memory. Does an upgrade require buying a circuit board or is there an add-on plug-in solution?

It requires additional or replacement of what are called memory modules and for a 10 year old PC, these cost from around a tenner. The work basically involves taking the side cover off the PC, removing excessive amounts of dust inside(!), replacing/adding modules, and reconfiguring the PC to use the added memory properly. Ensure that a static wrist strap is used or sensitive components are likely to perish. A bit of advice: if you decide to have a Ware-based specialist do this for you, and *given the age* of the PC (i.e. based on the increased likelihood that it WILL fail soon!), please do ensure that this job is well worth doing, or consider the time has finally come to invest in a replacement machine...

Also based on the operating system you are using you may not be able to use the additional memory even if you can install it. Many laptops have limited memory capacity so you need to be aware of that. http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/ The link above allows you to download and install a "scanner" that will check you system and tell you what you have and what you can install. If you have an old OS like XP then you will be limited to 4GB RAM max anyway.

quote:Thanks for the advice, only two programs in start up, memory is fine and I have removed all the programs in control panel I have no need of although there are 'tons' that I don't know what they do!!!

If you are still using XP, please consider getting a new machine soon MS Support ends in April & security bods suspect that hackers are holding on to exploits until then Also cross platform patches can be reverse engineered to act as a blueprint for security holes Meaning XP will become a bullseye for viruses (don't mean to sound like scaremonger, sorry) Virus scanners can only do so much & like others have suggested, no point spending money on a 10 yr old machine If money is an issue, consider installing Ubuntu or similar, requires less resources than Windows (& is a lot more secure against viruses)

If you've removed programs then a defrag of the hard drive may help as well.

Whatever the outcome, please DO NOT USE Computer Care in Fore Street, Hertford. I am currently involved in legal action with the company and its owner, as are many other people.

My pc has gone kapult. I unstalled all anti virus software this morning as trial had run out and reinstalled a new one. For some reason, it has decided it cant connect wirelessly to the internet now whilst the ipad can (obviously) even though i have backtracked and uninstalled new software. It can't connect with ethernet cable either, arrgghhh

Rant over, sorry! Computer problems just eat time!

I'd initially look at the network drivers Matt, see if the devices have been disabled in device manager. If they're working then check that any firewall software is allowing connections, you may have gone down into "lock down" mode on the firewall that disallows any traffic. Good luck!

Thanks Ian, I system restored back to this morning and it works now. I am now retracing my footsteps slowly, I have deleted all unnecesssary programs in control panel again (to free up ram) so that didn't cause it. Uninstall avast and install AVG now VERY slowly, will do a system back up right now!!!!!

I would echo TrapstyleResident's comments about XP. Some 12% of visitors to this site are still using Windows XP and they need to be aware that Microsoft are withdrawing ALL support in April next year, including Security fixes. If you are using Internet Explorer there is also no current version for XP.
