Please try to use English English on this forum. It's not a mobile phone you know - you've a whole alphabet at your disposal on your keyboard. Many thanks, Administrator

Hello, xmungox.
Cold Christmas does not have a church, so I presume you mean the ruined church of Thundridge. Only the tower now stands. It has a Norman (twelfth century) door in it, so the now ruined church must be approaching 900 years old. However, the tower is not as old as that because the doorway was moved when it was built.

There were rumours about 15 years ago that it was a gathering place for local (pretend) witches, it has a bad reputation and when i was younger a party was broken up by the police there. Maybe if you ask your local vicar if he can get hold of the records for the diocese you would find out more.

Is this the place where numerous footsteps trod, Where living votaries fill'd the house of God? Where the full chorus of the sounding choir Bade one loud strain of prayer and praise aspire? How silent now the desolated spot, Its paths untrodden and its use forgot!quote:

Hello there,
At last I find something about the old ruined church at Thunderidge! Or at least some mention of it. I have a huge interest for sites such as these, particularly if they are rumoured to have ghosts.
Ever since I have moved to Herts I've heard a few stories of strange events and happenings in various different places, and I've often heard of the old church at "Cold Christmas", which of course is not in the village itself but in the valley on the way there.
I,like Tammi have heard tales and rumours of withcraft, vandalism and desecration down there over the years, and people say it's haunted. But I noticed from this website that there is no real evidence of any hauntings, and it seems that no one really wants to talk about it, or everyone is so cagey about it, or maybe no one really knows anything! Maybe no one is interested.
But I am. I am intrigued by the place. Why is it that such a pretty place as been left go to ruin for so long? How sad a place it is to visit. I visited it with my mother last year and it was horrid to see the vandalism that has been done to all those graves and to the tower, what a lovely spot it must have been once. I must admit, it is a very creepy place, even during a warm summers day! I can see the attraction to groups of kids to spook themselves out at night! But how sad to see it, and to wonder what it must have been like all those years ago.
So does anyone know anything? Was it a private church to a great family? Are there any relatives alive today that can trace their ancestors back to those graves? Does anyone have any information or is it that none of you really do know anything about it, and that we only have rumours of the nasty goings-on there and it will sleep on silently for the next 500 years, holding it's forgotten history in it's poor decrepid desecrated stones,in a quiet, brooding sadness that it's true purpose has long been forgotten.
Do I detect another sigh of boredom from those of you that visit this comments page?

i think people do get bored reading about it if they know nothin about im so interested in the church tho not just the hurting but the church as well we have been there both night and day it was very spooky on both times.i have been doin some research online and i have found out about the a lady there called sarah gutteridge i got the name from the head stone it was very interesting she had a daughter but there was nothing about any father.but the other reason for me looking for these people is because if u look at the head stones they are nealy all the same name and all died around the same time also because some of the children where very young.if anyone know about these people please tell

It's not boring at all - its local history! What kind of dates are on the headstones if they are all from about the same time? Could it be the plague or something?
