Ware in Stitches- Golden Jubilee Quilt
11ft Square stitched textile hanging at Wodson Park Sports Centre, Ware
The Quilt may be viewed between the hours of 7am – 10pm every day of the week.

Inspired by the size of the Great Bed of Ware and with the intention of creating something of note to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, the Quilt incorporates many different methods & styles of needlework. It was worked on by over 100 people from 2 years to 83 years over the course of the Jubilee Year 2002-3.

Included in the Quilt is the Town Crest surrounded by 3” squares depicting the logos or badges representing some of the many varied organisations that were active within the town over the pre-ceding 50 years.

We wanted to make an exhuberant colourful addition to the town and believe this has been achieved not by designing the Quilt from the outset but by letting it evolve as ideas and stitched pieces were contributed.

It is hoped that at some future date the Quilt will hang alongside a full scale faithful replica of Wares famous Great Bed ( now housed at the V & A Museum in London). This will depend on space with adequate ceiling height becoming available within the Town. It does seem ironic that Ware was home to the Great Bed in several of the town’s inns but today has no space large enough. If anyone has any ideas on the subject please do call. If we are able to create a replica I know of a wealth of talent to furnish the bed with hangings and a coverlet!

Such was the enjoyment shared during the creation of the Quilt we continue to meet on a very informal basis as a keen group of stitchers sharing ideas, known as Ware in Stitches Meetings are on the second Wednesday of the month at Ware Arts Centre, Kibes Lane, Ware 7.30 0- 9-30pm.
You are welcome to join us.
