Ware Week Charities 2000

The Ware Week Committee's first major task each year is to nominate charities to benefit from Ware Week. Money raised from the sale of Ware Week Draw tickets and the collection taken during the procession is distributed to the chosen charities. Some groups also generously donate their Ware Week profits, which boosts the coffers even further.
The following five causes have been selected as Ware Week beneficiaries 2000:-

Herts Aid - Citizens Advise Bureau - Home Start
Ware Lions St.Mary's FC - Western House Hospital

HERTS AID
Herts Aid started life as the East Herts Support Group. This group was formed in 1991 to meet the needs of local people living with HIV and AIDS.
Herts Aid itself was launched on World Aids Day in 1992. The charity aims to provide practical and emotional support to anyone affected by HIV and AIDS, in and around Hertfordshire. Services include befriending, complementary therapies, transport, a drop-in and a roadshow that takes lily and AIDS awareness out into the community. Herts Aid relies heavily on the commitment of volunteers, without whom the charity would not exist. All of the volunteers are trained and supported by the charity and activities include befriending, find-raising and practical support for clients. New volunteers are always welcome.
Herts Aid is funded by Hertfordshire Social Services, West and East and North Hertfordshire Health Authorities and the National Lottery Charities Board, but it also relies heavily on donations. All money raised from donations goes directly into client support.
Anyone wanting further details can contact the charity on 01920 484784.

CITIZENS' ADVICE BUREAU
The Citizens' Advice Bureau is independent charity offering free confidential and impartial help, support and advice to anyone.
There has been a bureau in Ware since 1962 when the service was started in a small office in the High Street backed by funds from the Rotary Club.
East Herts District Council provides the offices used today which are in the Library car park. The council also grants CAB its core funding.
The bureau is open to the public weekdays between 10.00am and 3.30pm except on Thursdays when specialist appointments for money advice and tribunal representation are offered.
Morning appointments can be booked by telephone (01920 463495) and queries can answered by telephone. There is a drop service in the afternoons.
Some 90% of the CAB's workers are unpaid volunteers and new volunteers are always welcome. The charity's new national training programme introduces a competence based accredited scheme which gives volunteers the opportunity to gain a national recognised qualification in advice work.
Donations from Ware Week 2000 will be used to help the town's branch of CAB with its current project, which aims to extend and improve its service to its elderly and disabled clients.

HOME-START
Home-Start is a voluntary organisation in which volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families under stress in their own homes, helping to prevent family crisis and breakdown and emphasising the pleasures of family life.
Home-Start provides breathing space for parents and elbowroom for many professional workers who refer any family with at least one child under school age to the scheme.
The difficulties the families experience are diverse. They include illness of a parent or child, bereavement, depression, loneliness and financial and housing problems.
A volunteer will visit a family on a regular basis, usually once a week for two to three hours and provide support in whichever way is appropriate.
Volunteers must have had parenting experience. They undergo a ten-week course of preparation before home visits and are supported and supervised by the Home-Start Organiser.

Ware Lions St. Mary's
Ware Lions St. Mary's FC was formed in 1968 and was known as St.Mary's Junior FC.
In the early years matches were played against Scout/Cub and choir teams with no particular concern with age groups.
In 1970 the club became more serious and membership of local youth leagues were sought.
The change of name for the club came about when early success in a five-a-side competition resulted in a photograph appearing in The Mercury on the winning team with its toy mascot, a lion. The Mercury article carried the headline "The lion roars" and from then on, Ware Lions was adopted into the title.
The club now has nine youth sides and an adult team. It is a family club where the aim is for boys to play football fairly and sportingly so they can enjoy themselves.
Any funds received go into providing the kit and equipment needed to run a modern-day club.
