Premier Inn for Ware?

Post by Barzey »

Just noticed a matter in the Mercury that permission is being sought to build a Premier Inn with a Beefeater down in Marsh Lane see here http://www.hertfordshiremercury.co.uk/H ... 184919.htm

Seems like a good idea to me but not sure how things will work out in other peoples opinions and wishes

"A BUDGET hotel and pub could be coming to Ware if proposals are approved by Hertfordshire County Council. A report seeking approval to build a Premier Inn and Beefeater in Marsh Lane will be going before the the authority’s cabinet on Monday."

As is so often the case, The Mercury's grasp (or maybe, presentation) of the facts is questionable.

Firstly, no planning application has been submitted. Whitbread are not seeking approval from The County Council to build a hotel. They are seeking approval to renegotiate the council's lease on the land. Any planning application for a hotel/eaterie would be made to the District Council, not the County Council.

Whitbread would like to demolish the existing structures (including the County Council's Connexions building) and build a hotel and eatery. However, before they can submit a planning application they have to renegotiate the existing lease with HCC. If approved by The Cabinet, The County Council will agree to this if a replacement building is provided. Only then will a planning application be submitted to the District Council (who are the Local Planning Authority), probably around June or July. If the planning application is approved, Whitbread hope to start work in early Autumn.

The owners might object - usually you cant just take something owned by someone else.

I agree with Mel

(no need for sarcasm!) Owners of Roebuck have run it in to the ground - it would be perfect for a Premier Inn type establishment

I thought the original post was to do with the property on Marsh Lane and nothing whatsoever to do with the Roebuck. In order for the Roebuck to be rebranded a Premier Inn, the owners would need to reach a mutually agreed sale price and for the appropriate legalities to be completed. As such, talk of seizing the Roebuck is entirely without merit.

On a positive note, hopefully the go-ahead will be given to current the request and the redevelopment embarked on soon. A Premier Inn together with restaurant will hopefully encourage people to come to Ware and spend money which in turn will help generate new jobs in the area. New business can only be positive.

While I agree this would be a good thing for Ware, it's a crap place for it. Come to beautiful historic Ware and see our lovely industrial estate by the rail track!!

Not really anywhere else it could go.

(Ps the Roebuck owners will not sell it as a hotel)
